[VIDEO] How to paint a loose watercolour poppy

In this mini class in my good friend Anna Mason’s online school, I’m going to show you how to paint a loose watercolour poppy flower using a variety of techniques, including wet-in-wet and wet-on-dry.

To make things extra fun, I don’t start with an outline drawing for this painting, but instead I go straight in with my watery paint for a loose result.

No two poppies painted in this way will look the same, and you can have endless fun coming up with lots of different looking poppies.

What you’ll need:

If you don’t have the equipment and paints I recommend, get creative and try with what you have handy.

• A photo/s of some poppy flowers as your reference.
• HB Pencil
• Mop paintbrushes – Rosemary & Co Size 0/3 and 10/0
• Daisy palette (for mixing watery paints)
• Water bowl
• Paper towel
• Watercolour paper (I recommend Arches cold pressed paper 300gsm/140lb) Or this can be a great sketchbook exercise using any cold pressed paper type.
• Paints (see colour list below). I use Winsor and Newton paints.

Paint colours needed:

• Permanent Rose
• Quinacridone Violet
• Winsor Lemon
• Olive Green
• Payne’s Gray
