Paint a Winter Swan

Paint a Winter Swan

Would you like to learn how to capture winter in watercolour?

January carries a quiet kind of magic. The world feels softer, slower, and full of possibility, making it the perfect time to return to watercolour with intention and ease. In my first watercolour class of 2026, this session is about beginning gently—letting go of expectations and reconnecting with the joy of paint and water. A winter swan becomes our subject, symbolising calm, stillness, and grace as we step into a new creative year.

In this loose watercolour class, we focus on painting with just a few colours, allowing simplicity to guide the process. Limited palettes create harmony and freedom, helping you trust the flow of water rather than control every detail. Soft winter hues bleed into one another, forming atmosphere and mood, while the swan itself emerges quietly from the page—suggested rather than defined, calm against the winter backdrop.

To enhance the wintry feeling, we explore playful textures that bring the painting to life. Salt is sprinkled into damp washes, creating beautiful frost-like patterns that mimic ice, mist, and frozen water. At the very end, white paint is splattered gently across the surface, transforming the scene into falling snow. This final moment is spontaneous and joyful, a reminder that watercolour is as much about letting go as it is about technique.

This class is an invitation to slow down, loosen up, and begin the year creatively, embracing both calm and experimentation in real time.

I hope you’ll join me in this beautiful Winter Swan watercolour class today and there’s even a handy preview too!
